New Children’s Book Features Makauwahi Cave Reserve’s Tortoises
February 23, 2015
The journey of a couple of overgrown pet tortoises to their new home at Makauwahi Cave Reserve is the subject of a delightful new children’s book by Jennifer Foreman de Grassi Williams. The Williams Family Bids Aloha to Shell and Lily tells the story of the tortoises in simple poetic language sure to captivate children of a wide range of ages. It also slips in lots of information about the Makauwahi Cave Reserve, care and feeding of pet tortoises, and important ecological concepts like plant-animal interactions.
Illustrated with beautiful watercolors by Bobbi Kelly, this kids’ bestseller-to-be is available at the Reserve, and also in local bookshops and on Amazon. Proceeds from the book, which sells for $10, go to support the maintenance and education programs at Makauwahi Cave Reserve. We have lots of autographed copies, and you may meet this award-winning teacher and accomplished author and artist the next time you stop by to see our tortoise herd, as she is often there.
