Volunteers (Always) Needed
October 19, 2014
Like to learn more about propagating native plants? Our Senior Plant Specialist, Billie Dawson, can use your help to fill up our wonderful new greenhouse. We have loads of space – 1200 square feet of it – and literally millions of seeds and thousands of seedings waiting for their chance in the cosy new facility, and you can be a part. Come learn the basics of germinating, rooting, potting, and care with our resident expert.
These plants will be used for the upcoming restoration work in the adjacent abandoned quarry, as well as other worthy restoration projects. Some of the wetland plants will be used by our newest employee, Hena Caberto-Raco (see sidebar) as he improves our 15 ponds with more and better taro varieties, native sedges and other fiber plants, and more banana trees around the edges.
If you enjoy giving tours, contact our Tour Manager, Richard Segan, about giving him a hand with tours of the cave and the rest of the reserve. He has his hands full now that the cave is open for tours every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Perhaps you would like to help him out on busy days, or even take another day of the week for yourself. To inquire about volunteering, see the contact info on our home page.
